Background information:
In 1920 Mondrian published 'Le Néo-plasticisme', a booklet in which he attempted to further substantiate his ideas theoretically. In this book he elaborated on his earlier publications in the renowned magazine De Stijl about his 'new image', as he called his art.

Nieuwe Beelding of neoplasticisme is an art theory that originated around 1917 around the magazine De Stijl. The most important representatives of the Nieuwe Beelding are the artists Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondriaan. They set themselves the goal of purifying art from elements that in their opinion did not belong in it and tried to establish and apply the elementary (and in their eyes universal) principles of each art form in a rational way.

The 'Composition with a large red surface' still shows a relatively large number of coloured surfaces. Over the years, these disappeared more and more in Piet Mondriaan's search for the right rhythm and perfect balance. Mondriaan remained loyal to the Nieuwe Beelding until his death in 1944.
